Cannot use Clamshell mode on Mac OS X

This Apple article describes how to enable closed clamshell or closed display mode, however it does not work with DisplayLink displays:

The requirements for closed clamshell mode are:

  • Power adapter
  • External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
  • An External display

Unfortunately OS X does not see DisplayLink displays as External displays, therefore this criteria is not met and closed clamshell mode cannot be enabled.

This issue has been raised with Apple, but to date there is not a solution for this issue.
