macOS: Your screens have been stopped by the system message

If you encounter the message “Your screens have been stopped by the system” and your screens go black, it means macOS has stopped DisplayLink screens due to low disk space on the startup disk where the system resides.

Solution

Ensure that the startup disk where macOS is installed maintains at least 25 GB of free space.
If available space drops below this threshold, macOS may terminate the DisplayLink process, which is required to stream pixels to your screens.

Background

On macOS 15 Sequoia and later, DisplayLink Manager uses ScreenCaptureKit by default. ScreenCaptureKit is a macOS API that DisplayLink Manager leverages to stream pixels to external displays. Behind the scenes, the system appears to cache data to maintain a continuous pixel stream provided by ScreenCaptureKit. If available disk space falls below a certain threshold, the operating system may abruptly terminate streaming clients such as DisplayLink Manager.

Does DisplayLink record my screen?

No
. DisplayLink Manager does not record or store any data transferred to the device. The minimum disk space requirement is solely related to current macOS behavior and system resource management.
