Unable to install DisplayLink software on a Virtual Machine

If running Windows 10 Threshold or earlier on a virtual machine, for example Parallels, VirtualBox or HyperV, it was not possible to install DisplayLink software, due to the way DisplayLink host software interacts with the graphics hardware in Windows.

From Windows 10 Anniversary update, DisplayLink has a graphics architecture, developed in conjunction with Microsoft, which enables DisplayLink displays to be used on virtual machines.
