I have contacted DisplayLink support and got the following reply:

Hello,Thank you for your email.
I unfortunately cannot provide you with more information about it. We are indeed working on it with our partners but I cannot share it yet.
I completely understand that you are frustrated that it isn't still working but some changes cannot be simply implemented solely by our driver.
You may be sure that we are still working on having more HiDPi modes and other resolutions.
Sorry for not being able to provide it right now for you.
Kind regards,

Please make this happen. I really need that 1440p option....

They told me they don't ignore this forum and that they are aware of the problem.
I don't believe that it is technically that complicated to fix. When I connected my Dell D6000 dock to my Windows PC, everything worked flawlessly on every possible resolution I changed it to.
My guess is that DisplayLink is willing to fix it, but that they need Apple to make this possible. Apple is not incentivised to care, since their customers will buy Apple products anyway.
The workaround via BetterDummy unfortunately doesn't give a workable solution. Like Philippe says (17 dec), it's still blurry.
