While I am quite content with open-source nvidia (nouveau) driver and Displaylink right now, this set up is not sustainable.

The reason why nouveau driver only support is not sustainable is not exactly Displaylink's fault: the lack of progress in nouveau driver is actually the real cause of the pain: nouveau driver's progress has been so slow that much of NVidia's functionalities, such as video codex, and much more critically, machine-learning aspect of Nvidia can't be used when nouveau driver is used.

As result, people who want to use GPU to accelerate machine learning can't use Displaylink device at the same time.

Moreover, the ground itself is shifting: we are currently in a strange phase which wayland might replace xorg but progress itself is being slow.

I understand the asking Displaylink to support proprietary driver is kind of tricky in such complicated circumstances. But at the same time, I really like Displaylink's product and I have bought a couple devices for my family members, I really hope Displaylink can find a way in which I can use the full potential of my Nvidia hardware as well as the full potential of the Displaylink hardware.

This is on the backlog of Linux work, but is possible to be addressed by the community.

It is possible the issue could be fixed with changes to the EVDI driver, which is an open source component available on github here:

We are in this weird transition period from X to Wayland.

I think we need to be a bit specific on rather we want to use proprietary driver under Wayland or X environment.
