Black screens on macOS High Sierra 10.13.4+ and Mojave 10.14 Early Previews
The driver (DisplayLink Installer 4.1.11) doesn't work anymore withe macOS High Sierra bêta 10.13.4 (17E139) and newer.
Dear DisplayLink macOS users,
We are pleased DisplayLink 5.0.1 driver for macOS enables multiple extended display support on the latest Apple macOS 10.14.2 with additional features (clamshell and clone). We continue our strong support for the Mac platform and are working on delivering future updates with further performance improvements.
Driver 5.0.1: https://www.displaylink.com/downloads/file?id=1257
If your DisplayLink enabled device does not seem to work on 10.14, this is most likely due to the OS blocking our kernel extension. Please ensure our kernel extension is enabled by the OS as described in our FAQ: https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/1188004
Should you still miss extended displays on latest macOS with latest DisplayLink driver, please create a support ticket so your particular case can be investigated. Here is how: https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/755301
Due to changes in 10.13.4-10.13.6, it is not possible to enable DisplayLink extended displays, except one using Apple AirPlay. If your Mac is from 2011 running 10.13.4-10.13.6 and can’t update to macOS 10.14, you should remain with DisplayLink macOS driver v4.3.1 to enable one extended USB display using AirPlay, with additional displays cloned. An FAQ details how to enable Apple AirPlay with DisplayLink display for extend or mirror mode: https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/1854724
Audio and Ethernet functionality, where supported, stays unaffected in all versions.
We thank you for your feedback on DisplayLink products that helps us further improve our product offering.
Kind regards,
Alban

Re: 'How Development Works'
I was speaking yesterday with a friend who recently got a job as a manager in a development house 'mostly in the Windows space,' as he says. I asked if they would deign to work on Apple software? 'Only in very limited circumstances,' was the answer. I then described the problem that is the object of this thread. He said, 'Oh, God, I have no idea. That sounds like something Apple would have done to screw somebody for something. I don't care, and I don't want to know.'
Just a little anecdote for you from the Windows development world. -

450 user company. Approx 280 Targus Displaylink USB port replicators.
Thankfully only about 50 Mac users.
Sigh..... -

Display link enables greater productivity, the consequences of this not working due to firmware updates has a detrimental impact. More resources must be diverted to support compatibility resolve as 1 month is totally unacceptable due to the impact on its end users and the Display Link brand.

Are there any other products that offer different drivers [non-DisplayLink] for external display for Mac OS? I want to buy it in case if any issues like this occur again in the future.

It would be fun to have more details on the progress you guys are making on this issue. You have posted 4 admin updates so far that all say the same thing and the information that has been put in these updates are all things we figured out as soon as we did the Mac update.
Could you guys at least tell us if you have made any progress on the issue, have you been working with apple or not? Do you have any idea how much time this could take to fix? Apple released this update on March 29th and the issue was flagged about one week after. You guys have had this issue for 2 months now and all we get from you guys is: "We know there is an issue, things still work properly on the previous OS version... blablabla" Thanks for telling us what we already know. Apple can make a new phone in 2 months, you guys can't even do a proper driver update.

Question, I know we are all struggling with our devices not working, but what about the High Sierra Beta, does it work on that? Have we tried this?

I'm sure Targus and DisplayLink will be happy to hear I'm about to cancel an order for 2000 port replicators because of this issue.

James I've tried calling all of their offices worldwide, their partners and up to this point I've not been successful in making contact. At the moment this is the only channel where they update. However, I wouldn't really use the cloned screen solution personally for now. If you can Look up Clark on this thread and use his directions to downgrade otherwise use my solution if you don't have time machine.
Apple are aware of the issue though, and DL have been trying to fix it, but at the moment I'll highly recommend investing in a TB2 to hdmi if you can to get around this.

We appreciate you are working on a solution and you can see >780 comments expressing frustration at the loss of functionality and the long period with the lost function. It is surprising that DisplayLink did not have a better relationship with Apple to foresee the problems or better testing of Apple's beta software to identify the problem. Fix the problem with the software so you can fix the relationship with your customers.

look me up on linked in. Nothing to hide. check companies house. nothing to hide. Yup I'm as real as they come. Calling and grouping people as nerds and geeks is wrong. no justification. I've hated that all my life. because I'm smarter than you, you give me a label. when I have not provoked you. Reminds me of the days where passing grades or obtaining the highest grade meant ridicule from your not so academically challenged peers. Honestly it's not a nice label.
Like I have said if you have an issue with someone call them out individually, there's no need to go around bashing everyone.
Now i'm not going to defend my comments, I've been a veteran on this forum for quite some time now. And yes there are idiots on here who do not come to assist others but shouting wild odds. No need to attack Clark, he's definitely helped people and shared his wisdom.
This is what this here is about. Clark is just one example but it angers me that people come on here have no idea what they are talking about then like i said (idiots) i.e. people who act on ignorance. i.e. they read something in the news and it must be true. No person of sound capability would validate such nonsense without verifying the facts.
So yes I stand by my comment. That this place isn't about the rants that Apple had it in beta 2 months prior, That DL doesn't know or acknowledge anything. These and a majority of comments have no substance.
Then there's people like Justinian World. Seriously!! I won't waste the forums time on this guy. Let's look at his history with us.
1) Made no positive contribution
2) Personally offended 2 people in one day
3) I'm sure he means well but what has my job (btw i'm a software development manager) not a bank teller, has anything to do with it. Do I have to justify helping as much people as I can to get them through this time. What have you contributed. Nothing. Also, Don't attack Clark, that guy has given much more people on here they're working live back until this situation is fix.
Very simple Justinian World get a life. I'm simply highlighting the fact there's a lot of people who think they understand how development works and having a dig at DL when they have no understanding of the root issue. If you are one of those people Justinian World then maybe you need to go back and have a good read of the core issue before coming on here.
I will continue to push the issue itself with apple on the official bug logged with apple for developers. I understand you guys have a public forum for apple but, Like I said in my previous post sign up to Apple Developers and push the topic that way.

"I was referencing his comments about me personally, not his general comments. Having to defend my comments is not why I got involved in this forum, but exactly why I avoid social media as much as possible. " Well said Sir. Thank you. This thread got me to doing some research on my own setup and it is amazing how many of these displaylink enabled products out there that won't work for a certain few. The various hubs all require TB 2 at least.... I cannot afford a new computer, so I make things last as long as possible.... The 2011 Mini lost a monitor, but the black Macbook from 2008 still uses displaylink fine, so it is really all about how you use it and how you upgrade... wait a bit or do it straight away. That is the lesson reminded. I'm saving for that 2019 Pro desktop thing thing apple said it would release.

Justinian - I was referencing his comments about me personally, not his general comments. Having to defend my comments is not why I got involved in this forum, but exactly why I avoid social media as much as possible.
Maybe I can help someone move forward from this inconvenience so they can concentrate on something useful. I don't know, if you feel it necessary to light me up and it makes you feel better, then by all means have at it. I just won't comment about it any more.

Yes Clark, he is really spreading kind words....:
"Seriously people it's like some educationally subnormal people leaving comments...."
"What planet are you other idiots coming from, ooh Apple released the update 2 months etc... can you even write a line of code. Shut up, you have no idea how development works...."
"It's not just DL that is affected you idiots....."
"But seriously, stop the non-sense coming on here blasting DL like you have anything to help other users apart from spreading your negative and arrogant attitude. No one comes here to read that shit...."
"Thank you to all positive contributors, let's keep this forum a helpful place and eradicate these idiots who know nothing about nothing..."

Eamon S - Thank you for the kind words and be assured I haven't abandoned this forum just because I have a working solution. I continue to read the posts here and will offer my assistance where applicable.
I wanted to pat you on the back for summarizing the issue and bringing folks back to reality with your last post. This issue is complex and, in my opinion, another sign of the times created by security concerns. I'll share an example of my early work experience at Jet Propulsion Laboratory that may parallel this issue in a very simple way. Before any GUI came along, everything was character based in the programming world. I would write programs that had menus and a number associated with the menu choices. Then Windows 3.11 came along, which changed visibility in to programs that may not have been seen otherwise. One of those programs was format.exe which does exactly what the name implies. Needless to say, there were a lot of "not so sophisticated" users that would need immediate attention due to their curiosity with this command. After all, what can go wrong with executing a command when you have no idea what it's going to do? My point is this, I was forced to rename format.exe to tamrof.exe on every machine that was delivered until Microsoft protected that executable. No one can predict everything and, although there has been much progress, these wonderful tools we use everyday are a work in progress.
It is rather scary Apple has so much power, but with that power comes great responsibility. I find it hard to believe they would throw away what they have worked so hard to build over something as silly as intentionally removing USB video, without some security concern in mind.
I could be way off base but it's my 2 cents worth of observation.
Everyone please keep in mind, from most every challenge comes education and growth. Let's keep positive and support each other. That's why we're here!

Haha Eamon thinks he is as cool as people who own stock... You are a wanker bank teller. "Works for a financial institution"? That is like a burger king employee saying they work at a dining establishment.
