DisplayLink displays don't work before sign-in
Why don't DisplayLink displays work before sign-in when FileVault is enabled?

When FileVault is enabled on a Mac, DisplayLink-connected displays are not available at the FileVault login screen before sign-in. This behavior is expected and is a result of how FileVault works on macOS.
Why does this happen?
FileVault encrypts the Mac's startup disk. After powering on the computer, macOS requires authentication to unlock the encrypted volume before the normal operating environment becomes available.
DisplayLink technology relies on DisplayLink Manager software running within macOS. At the FileVault login screen, the DisplayLink software is not yet running because the encrypted startup volume has not been unlocked and the full operating environment is not available.
As a result, DisplayLink-connected displays cannot be driven during this stage of the boot process and remain unavailable until after sign-in.
What happens after sign-in?
Once you authenticate and FileVault unlocks the startup volume, macOS continues loading the normal user environment. DisplayLink Manager can then start, detect connected DisplayLink devices, and enable external displays.
Can I use DisplayLink displays before sign-in?
Only if FileVault is disabled.
If FileVault is enabled, DisplayLink displays will not be available until after a user signs in. This is a limitation of the macOS boot and security architecture rather than a limitation of a specific DisplayLink device or docking station.
How can I check if FileVault is enabled?
- Open System Settings.
- Navigate to Privacy & Security.
- Select FileVault.
DisplayLink Manager also displays a notification in the Support tab when FileVault is enabled and external displays are unavailable before sign-in.
Summary
- FileVault encrypts the startup disk and requires authentication before the normal macOS environment becomes available.
- DisplayLink requires DisplayLink Manager software running within macOS.
- DisplayLink software is not available at the FileVault login screen.
- Therefore, DisplayLink-connected displays become available only after sign-in when FileVault is enabled.
