macOS App: Clamshell / Lid Closed Mode
The macOS App driver does not allow me to operate on external monitors with the laptop closed. I had to uninstall the driver and reinstall the one from November to be able to work in clamshell mode. This is glitchy in the old driver, often freezing my computer. I was hoping to see this stabilize so I wouldn't have to restart so often (almost every time I disconnect my laptop from the docking station).
macOS 12 Monterey is now released and addresses the clamshell / lid closed use case on Intel macbook computers.

I have the same problem. Still using the November version of the driver to get this working. For such an expensive docking station, it is ridiculous it would on the market if this doesn't work.

Alban - I'm so happy to see this is in development. Working with a third party does generally slow things down and make it difficult to predict when a fix can be released but could you give us a rough idea. Is it months or years away? Less than 2 years? More than one month? Just some rough margin would be more helpful than not knowing at all. Thanks in advance :)

I do have severe issues with Clamshell mode using a MacBook Pro 2018 running BigSur 11.4.
Not only that it doesn't support any password authentication you might have for an encrypted harddrive (so you have to open the lid again), during "regular" operation the system keeps disabling the external monitors (like every 1 1/2 minutes) and once you move your mouse or hit the keyboard come back up (with having to enter the password again in my case).I just read afterwards that clamshell is not officially supported but it is a bummer since some OEM vendors using this technology do not mention this (TOTU)

Clamshell mode works fine on MacBook Pro M1 and BigSur 11.4 with version 1.4.0 of DisplayLink Manager for me. Having two 4k 60Hz USB-C displays. First one is connected via USB-C, the second is connected via DisplayLink USB-A to HDMI using the USB Hub in the main / first display.
Note that the selectable resolution in the DisplayLink connected display is either scaled HiDPI with "looks like 1080" or native 3840x2160. Hope this is getting fixed soon!! -

Hi guys!
Nothing is fixed in the latest version. This should be a major update that we should get in priority I don't understand why we can still have an issue like this. :/

Well - version 1.4 is out but I don’t see anything called out explicitly that would fix this issue. Also from the release notes:

UPDATE: I see that the following statement has recently been updated:
"Synaptics is a chip and technology company and we do not sell any product directly to end users, therefore we only have a small end user support team."
That may at least suggest some improvement from the previous message: "...therefore do not have a dedicated end-user support team."

@TonyMacLover - No problem, you filled in exactly what I left unsaid! 😉. (And what I posted is what DisplayLink prominently states at https://support.displaylink.com/)
Re the resellers of products containing DisplayLink technology, they are just as reliant on DisplayLink to fix what is broken as we are - even more so, as they are now selling products that do not work as intended. And they're paying DisplayLink a fee for every unit sold.
I urge everyone to contact their respective resellers and suggest that they raise these issues directly to DisplayLink as well. Kensington has already heard from me, and I'd like to think they're hearing from other customers who are in a similar boat.

Sorry Charlie, see you actually are not with DisplayLink ... you are correct and my comments are aimed at them not you (-:

Charlie .. that may be so but it is your product and your drivers so you have a responsibility to deliver solutions to the problems. If not directly, then through your resellers.
Your resellers must then be adequately skilled to provide the services to assist the end users - which they are not and just refer us back to you.
In this instance all have to do is post the updated drivers that does what is being asked for and the users will download it and install it themselves. No need for you to provide any more service than that.
Is that unreasonable to ask ?

I only bought this docking station a few weeks ago and chose it for the good OSX support etc. Clamshell mode worked fine until the other day so very disappointed and now see it was lost due to the BigSur update! Please get this sorted ASAP as its really poor to lose this capability from such an expensive item!

Just gonna leave this here: "DisplayLink is a chip and technology company and we do not sell any products directly to end-users, therefore do not have a dedicated end-user support team."

I cannot get my Mac Powerbook 2017 to display 2 monitors in clamshell nor 3 with the lid open as described on amazon. Monitors are Sceptre E22 and E24 and both connected via HDMI.

Hi,
Our company is rolling out Big Sur updates to all machines, needless to say that it's becoming urgent to have that clamshell functionality enabled with the latest drivers. I have downloaded v1.3.1 and still nothing... When is it going to become available?
-
Max Tellez commented
they launched 1.3.1 today! still no support with the lid closed on my MacBook Pro 15 2018..
-
smustgrave commented
I'm convinced this company doesn't really pay attention to feedback for this to still be an issue after all this time. I also cannot close my macbook 2018. Would start researching an alternative docking solution. If anyone finds a good one let us know!

Works perfectly with my corporate 13" MacBook Pro 2019 Intel, using DisplayLink version 1.0.0, I can have the lid closed and everything behaves as expected, including only having two screens.
If I connect my wife's corporate 13" MacBook Pro 2018 Intel, DisplayLink version 1.0.0, it goes into sleep mode some 15 seconds after login. Repeatedly.
Any ideas as to why this is?
Also: fix this ASAP!!
