macOS App: Clamshell / Lid Closed Mode
The macOS App driver does not allow me to operate on external monitors with the laptop closed. I had to uninstall the driver and reinstall the one from November to be able to work in clamshell mode. This is glitchy in the old driver, often freezing my computer. I was hoping to see this stabilize so I wouldn't have to restart so often (almost every time I disconnect my laptop from the docking station).
macOS 12 Monterey is now released and addresses the clamshell / lid closed use case on Intel macbook computers.

I have purchased the Universal Twin HD Pro USB Docking Station for my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro / Catalina 10.15.7 .
Clamshell mode does not work and multiple monitor setup is very clunky. Are these issues going to be addressed ? Very frustrated, along with all the other users on these forums...Is anything being done to resolve these issues ??

The approach with installing the legacy version (5.2.5 DisplayLink USB Graphics Software for macOS) only partly works for me. The lid mode works, but you cannot disconnect from the docking station properly (i.e. pull off the cable and run). Once you do that, the mac gets freezed and you have to restart (no go!).
I am running 10.15.7 on a 2018 MacBook Pro.

Thank you so much zenofall. This was driving me crazy.

I followed zenofall's advice and installed the legacy version, and clamshell works great.
> "Go to legacy releases section just below the main download section and get 5.2.5 DisplayLink USB Graphics Software for macOS."
Just remove the the latest DisplayLink from your Applications folder. There's no dedicated uninstaller program. Then, restart (very important you restart!). Once you restart, then follow instruction for installing the legacy version (DisplayLink v5.2.5).

Instead of using the DisplayLink Manager Graphics Connectivity.
Go to legacy releases section just below the main download section and get 5.2.5 DisplayLink USB Graphics Software for macOS.
This works with the clamshell closed, I am on a 2019 MacBook Air 10.15.7 -

I'm having a similar issue. I just got a Kensington SD3650 docking station. When I run my Late 2012 Macbook Pro in clamshell mode, the two external monitors go dark for several seconds about every 45 seconds. It's fine with the laptop open, but part of the reason I got the docking station was so I could run the laptop as a desktop at home. Very frustrating so far.

Same here +4
I use two different macbooks on two different docking stations and get the faulty behaviour.
Why is this so lang in Analysis and open since August? What can the community do to help, push this forward quicker? Obviously there is quite a need on that end, since 38 people already took the effort and commented on that.

Yep same here...
2 external DELL monitors, DEll DL6000 dock using DP ports for monitors. Catalina 10.15.7. MPB 2017.
Fine with laptop screen open, 3 screens..
Close laptop screen and 'Displays' still shows 3 screens.
And my monitors blink every 40secs or so..Tried a mixture of all settings, updated dock firmware (really annoying to have to use Windows for this process!!!).
Please fix..!

I am having the same issue. Its super annoying .. I have to keep my laptop open on all the time. Is there a workaround? I have already downloaded the latest version of DisplayLink which is supposed to work on Catalina 10.15.7.

Any update on the fix for clamshell mode? It has been more than a month in Feasibility Analysis. If no update, then might have to return the docking station.

I have MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), and dock is useless in clamshell mode. Every time I disconnect from dock Macbook needs restart.

Piggybacking, though my issue is slightly different. I updated to Catalina 10.15.6 and had to download the updated DisplayLink Manager. Since the update, if I close the MacBook, every 5 minutes or so the mac appears to go to sleep and wake back up and prompt me for my password again. Unusable. My workaround is to ALMOST close my MacBook. We'll see how that works out.

I'm on the Release: 5.2.5 beta driver/manager with a 2016 macbook pro 13 running catalina.
everything working great except closing the lid.@KS, you're saying you got the D6000 to work with your lid closed on your macbook by following those steps???

Alban - Clamshell mode is completely inoperable using MacBook Pro 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 with Catalina 10.15.6. I am glad "feasibility analysis is in progress" but I hope this is fixed ASAP. This makes the docking station an expensive obsolete brick. In today's Zoom everything environment, I cannot keep working like this. Will keep an eye out for the driver fix. But, will have to start looking for a fully functional docking station soon.~ Tony

I'll chime in here as well. I had just gotten the Dell D6000 USB dock to use with a couple of 2016 MacBook Pros (both 13 and 15-inch), and the DisplayLink Manager was not working for me consistently. There was a brief moment when I was setting it up and it somehow worked (i.e. allowed me to use it in clamshell mode successfully), but that was short-lived and stopped working when I switched computers and switched back.
After reading through these comments, the workaround that worked for me was:
1) Uninstall DisplayLink Manager and unplug the dock (not sure if unplugging is necessary, but you might as well do it)
2) Install the DisplayLink USB Graphics Software (version 5.2.5 for me, but 5.2.4 or 5.2.1 would have likely also worked as suggested by other users). I followed these directions (https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/1188004-macos-10-13-10-14-and-10-15-video-functionality) to allow the kernel extension.
3) Restart after installation, then plug in the dock.Hope that ends up helping someone. I was getting pretty frustrated at having to have my laptop open when docked and finding this thread was a godsend.
