Message: "The software package appears to have been modified." when trying to install

This message can be seen when trying to install DisplayLink software:

This message will occur if the digital signature of the installer cannot be verified. Generally, the reasons are:
  • The DisplayLink Software executable has been corrupted during download and cannot be run. To solve this, try downloading the software again, possibly from another computer, to prevent the corrupted software from being cached.
  • Windows is unable to verify certificate on DisplayLink software. To solve this, make sure that your Windows installation is up to date with the latest Windows updates. On Windows 7, you need Service Pack 1 with at least KB2533623 and KB3033929 installed to support SHA-2 driver hash from DisplayLink driver R8.0+.
  • Certain OS protection software is installed, eg Dell Protected Workspace
